With the
support of the community, the Renaissance
Academy seniors presented their Commencement Project experiences for the
parents and staff on Friday, November 7th
. This culminating graduation requirement is truly an opportunity
for the students to pull together much of what they have learned in the
classroom and combine it with a personal passion to initiate a positive
influence in the greater community. The Class of 2015 accumulated over
3000 hours serving people in their community.
The young people who graduate from Renaissance Academy understand that they have the awesome power to change their community. With the support of their parents, teachers, and the people of the community, the students develop the character and confidence to move outside their comfort zone and understand the perspective of another. Students address violence, hunger, homelessness, oppression in their community and around the world. The graduating seniors invest in music appreciation, technology, school choice, child care, suicide prevention, literacy and compassionate care for the elderly. They raise money for Ronald McDonald House, local soup kitchens, Leukemia and Breast Cancer research. They collect shoes, blankets, coats, canned goods, and dog food. The students spend their project experiences with therapeutic riding lessons, animal rescues, and local community gardens in the Phoenixville area. Time is spent supporting wounded warriors, victims of domestic violence and children in local hospitals. Most of the class stay local while some travel to Costa Rico, India, and Honduras to reach out to those in need.
In this educational opportunity, the people of the community are the teachers. The students learn to listen first and save their judgments for another day. They learn compassion and the importance of service. Mentors in all outreach agencies help to teach the graduating seniors the values that will serve them for a lifetime. The students in the Class of 2015 of Renaissance Academy would like to thank all those who help to support and mentor them throughout all the stages of their project. In return, the students truly realize that they have the awesome power to change the world.
