Frequently Asked Questions about the Commencement Project
Why do we have to do a senior project?
The state of Pennsylvania requires each school district to design and implement a culminating project. The Senior Project Coordinator and board members of Renaissance Academy established a senior project that would not only meet the state requirements but benefit the student as he/she transitions to college.
Are our senior project requirements more rigorous than other public schools?
The Project Coordinator informally surveyed over ten schools in the area to see what the requirements are for their senior projects. There are a variety of projects being implemented in this area. Generally speaking, our project requirements are not more difficult to fulfill. The structure of the project is provided to allow the project to be a learning experience for future project endeavors.
Is completion of a senior project a requirement for graduation?
All students graduating from the Renaissance Academy must receive a passing grade on their senior project in order to receive a diploma for graduation. This policy echoes the requirements directed by the state of Pennsylvania.
Why do we start our senior project in ninth grade?
In 9th grade, we ask the students to reflect on their talents, interests, and life experiences. As they go into the summer months, we ask them to think about what they have to offer their community. When they come back to school in the fall of tl, the students are asked to write an Initial Proposal of what they are considering for their project. The project, although culminating, is designed to complement not interfere with course work load. Time is given throughout the school year to complete project requirements. As the student enters their senior year, they will not only see the project come together but they will realize the growth along the way.
As questions come up, the Senior Project Coordinator will post a response so that everyone will have a chance to become more familiar with the program.
